Wazir Mall, Sher Muhammad Khan was the son of Janas Khan of Mingora. Janas Khan was the son of Tajal Noor, a powerful and influential Khan of Haqdad Khel. One of his sons, Jamroz Khan was known for and wide for his Pakhunwali and wisdom.
Wazir Mall Sahib was born, most probably in 1890. A short sketch of his life has been written on the wall of his shrine at Gulkada, Swat. He played his role in establishing the State of Swat his brothers. His powerful uncle, Jamroz Khan was also in good relations with Miangul Gulshahzada Abdul Wadud (Bacha Sahib) and his brother Miangul Sherin Jan. He gave his daughter in marriage to Sherin Jan. She was popularly known by her title, “Khana Bibi”. Later on some misunderstanding led to unfortunate events, when Jamroz Khan was killed by his nephew Pir Mohammad Khan. Anyhow, that is another story.
The sons of Janas Khan rose to high ranks in the Swat State administration and forces. Pir Muhammad Khan was Commander of the State Malatia, Sharif Khan was Hakim and served in many tehsils of the State. Musharraf Khan was Captain in the forces of Swat. Humayun Khan, son of Wazir Mall Sahib was Private Secretary to Wali Sahib. His brother Sher Shah Khan was Tehsildar till his retirement.
But the one who gained most powerful position in the State of Swat was Wazir Mall, Sher Mohammad Khan. He started service in the State as Tehsildar and had rapid promotions to reach the highest position in the State bureaucracy. He was the best and trust worthy man for his job. Due to his good management and expertise, the State Revenue increased year by year and reached a level of surplus budget. Wali Sahib had great trust on him and he deserved it. He deserved the honor and status conferred upon him by the State.
According to protocol order of precedence, issued every year by the State, he was always No. 1, alongwith Wazir Mulk, Sepa Salar and Chief Secretary. He lived a honourable life. In Saidu Sharif, his first abode was the house in which now the descendants of Aqal Mand Mirz Sahib live. Probably in 1960, Wali Sahib constructed a spacious bungalow for him near the State stores. He was a very well dressed man and had a very graceful personality, looking so attractive in local and English dress alike.
He got retirement in 1967 and shifted to his house in Mingora. Mohallah Wazir Maal is named after in the heart of Mingora city. During the last year of his service, some misunderstanding developed between him and Wali Sahib, to which Wali Sahib has referred to in his autobiography written by Professor Fredrik Barth.
Having said that, Sher Muhammad Khan, Wazir Mall Sahib was one of the pioneer builders of Swat as a princely State. He was rightly chosen for the task and he delivered to the best of his ability, capacity and hard work. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
